Endovenous Laser Treatment

Endovenous Laser Treatment is an alternative to surgical stripping of the greater saphenous vein. A small laser fiber is inserted, usually through a needle stick in the skin, into the damaged vein. Pulses of laser light are delivered inside the vein, which causes the vein to collapse and seal shut. The procedure is done in-office under local anesthesia. Following the procedure, a bandage or compression hose is placed on the treated leg. Here's what to expect from the EVLT^® procedure:

Ultrasound is used to map out your vein.
Local anesthetic is applied.
A thin laser fiber is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually near the knee.
Laser energy is delivered to seal the faulty vein.
Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged. Normal daily activity can be resumed; just avoid rigorous activities such as gym workouts.
There may be minor soreness and bruising. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter, non-aspirin pain relievers as necessary.
