Endovenous Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins (EVLT):

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) of the great saphenous vein (GSV) has been recently introduced as an alternative, minimally invasive technique for the treatment of saphenous vein incompetence. This procedure was designed to ablate the GSV through a percutaneous approach to minimize the discomfort and complications associated with conventional vein stripping.
The EVLT releases thermal energy both to the blood and the venous wall, causing localized tissue damage. Relative simplicity and high patient satisfaction have made this procedure increasingly popular. Early reports on endovenous ablation demonstrate high occlusion rates.
Another technique using radiofrequency to ablate the GSV is available. The occlusion rates after laser technique have been superior (98 to 100%) comparing to (83 to 93%) after radiofrequency according to a Mayo Clinic report. In addition, the radiofrequency cost was higher.
